Blog #9 - AI SkillsYes, I agree that AI has made English skills more valuable and that studying the art of literature is more important in a world with AI. Although AI technology continues to advance and has become prominent in the world of English literature, it has not yet reached the level of replacing human skills such as critical thinking and analyzing in-depth text. It does not have the ability to generate text that would have the depth and personal touch from experiences that human writers bring to their work. Despite this, AI remains a beneficial tool for all individuals, especially those who know how to effectively interact with it. It can easily summarize large amounts of information and extract key points, saving valuable time and providing precise knowledge on complex topics. In conclusion, AI has undeniably enhanced the value of English skills and literature study, but it is not yet advanced enough to replace human abilities. It remains a valuable tool for individuals and will continue to do so as AI technology advances.
Blog #8 - Shylock: Good or Evil?In the ongoing debate surrounding the character Shylock from the play by William Shakespeare “The Merchant of Venice,” a disputable question arises: is he good or bad? This blog post aims to dive into the complex character of Shylock and analyze his good and bad aspects. On one hand, the character of Shylock represents resilience and intellect. He also suffers from victimization due to his Jewish background and experiences great loss and suffering. Regardless of this, he has not succumbed to desolation, but instead maintains a determined mindset in his pursuit of justice. His intellect also shines through his business dealings and showcases his alert decisions and cleverness. Despite the endless obstacles he has faced throughout his lifetime, Shylock manages to live a successful life. On the other hand, Shylock shows traits of vengefulness, lack of mercy, and isolation. His pursuit of Antonio's pound of flesh is seen as a cruel and merciless act from the audience's perspective. Throughout the play, he is very insistent and shows no mercy when it comes to Antonio’s pound of flesh. This reflects the cold and unforgiving nature of Shylock's character. In addition to this, Shylock is a very isolated person. Due to the victimization, he has to endure due to his Jewish background, he lives a life of bitterness and anger. This creates an even bigger division between Shylock and his community. In conclusion, the character of Shylock is very complex and can invoke a variety of interpretations from the audience. Despite his good qualities, such as being resilient and intellectual, he also carries traits of vengefulness, lack of mercy, and isolation. Ultimately, the answer to this question is subjective as many find the story of his character understanding, while others see it cruel.
Blog #7 - Minority Groups and MarginalizationMarginalization is the term used to describe the societal, economic, and political processes that push specific groups of individuals to the edges of society. These marginalized groups often face barriers and are restricted from access to opportunities and resources. The results of this include many marginalized groups facing exclusion and disadvantaged positions in society. An example of a marginalized group is the First Nations in Canada. The history of Canada is filled with the systemic exclusion faced by the Indigenous population. In the past, they faced residential schools, loss of land, and many disruptions to their way of life. They experienced emotional and physical abuse and generational trauma that impacted their cultural knowledge and way of living. Although most of these things happened in the past, they still find themselves facing ongoing challenges, which include limited opportunities, inadequate infrastructure, restricted healthcare access, and much more. Several agreements have been made between the First Nations and Canada to address these issues, but many of these agreements have yet to be honored by the Canadian government. There have been many reconciliation efforts and collaboration between the First Nation and the government, but there is still a significant amount of work that remains until both sides can live in harmony.
Blog #6 - Visual vs TextVisuals and text are two effective forms of communication that have different functions. Text provides a clear and organized approach because it communicates information through written words. This allows it to be a perfect medium for expressing depth of thought and capturing the reader's imagination since it supports complicated concepts and extensive explanations. Its flexibility allows it to dive into intricate details and encourage analytical thought. On the other hand, visuals have the power to draw in viewers with its ability to capture emotions and simplify complex material. Visuals are a form of universal language that could be understood by all. It is a powerful tool that can be used to condense information into a visual narrative. Visuals usually are more engaging to viewers and enhance the experience when communicating a meaningful message. Essentially, visuals are much more captivating and simpler to the viewers, whereas text delivers depth and analytical precision. Overall, both text and visuals are effective ways of communication, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. They can be used together or on their own, it all depends on the needs of the author and the message they want to convey.
Blog #5 - Photojournalist ResponsibilitiesThe work of a person in the field of journalism is to capture images that tell a story of people, events, and places. A photojournalist by the name of Kevin Carter photographed a popular picture known as “the vulture and the little girl.” This photograph has sparked an ongoing debate between many people. Though everybody is entitled to their own opinions, I believe the photojournalist was wrong for documenting the picture instead of helping the little girl. In no situation should a photograph be chosen over the life of another human being. It should be considered unethical and wrong. In cases of extreme suffering and hardship, photojournalists should intervene and put ethical responsibilities over a photograph that has little meaning compared to a human life.
Blog #4 - StereotypingThe ABC episodes “What Would You Do? Vandals Racism Pt 1 & 2” conducts a behavioral study on how people react to two groups of different races vandalizing a car. The reactions from the people walking by were one-sided; the white vandals gained little attention, while the black vandals had many calls to 911 and confrontations. This experiment reveals how racial stereotypes are still reinforced within society and the harmful effects they cause to individuals and society as a whole. Racial stereotypes strongly influence how individuals react with others and the choices they make. As a society, it is important to acknowledge the negative consequences of these stereotypes as it encourages discrimination and unequal treatment. Putting an end to racial stereotypes is a complex process that requires a collective effort from individuals and society. This can involve raising awareness and encouraging diversity and inclusivity throughout all aspects of life. A society that values and celebrates diversity and inclusivity can be achieved by eradicating these racial stereotypes.
Blog #3 - Is An Apology Enough?Countless innocent lives have been and continue to be taken by the hands of many police officers. In these cases, justice is scarce, and the only thing given out is an apology. An apology is just words, it can not fix the pain and suffering of the families of victims, and it can not bring them back to life. Even with these apologies, nothing ever changes, the system stays the same, and the people that the police are supposed to protect are afraid of them. Law enforcement officers should not be protected for crimes they commit just because they are an officer. Nobody is above the law, and everyone should be penalized the same no matter what. People want change; change is justice and not repeating the same mistakes. Although an apology can be enough when action is taken to back it up, it is not enough when it continues to be an issue we face today.
Blog #2 - Police MisconductPolice brutality has become one of the most controversial issues facing the justice system of North America. In the past few years, cases of police brutality have skyrocketed and have made it into countless headlines in popular news outlets. These unfortunate events have sparked riots and protests throughout all of North America. In the video essay, Hasan Minhaj speaks out on police misconduct and why society has to come together and take action to make changes for the safety of all citizens and especially people of color. Two points that stood out to me in this video were “qualified immunity” and the records of police officers. Despite the many cases of police violence, they are still protected by the law and have their records hidden from the public eye. Officers can easily get away with misconduct without being charged or held accountable. As these cases continue to pile up, communities all over North America have found it difficult to trust the law enforcement that was meant to keep us protected. As a society, we need to force law changes and seek justice for victims of police brutality as well as change our approach to policing to help keep the problem contained and prevent it from getting out of hand.
Blog #1 - What is art? What is art? When asked this question, I found it very hard to come up with a definite answer. You may not realize it, but everywhere you go art is there in one form or another, ranging from graffiti on city walls to the music you listen to every day. After some thought it hit me that there will never be an agreed-upon definition of the word art. Art is subjective, and the meaning you come up with for the word can be from personal experiences and emotions. Everyone will have their own unique interpretation of the word art. This is what makes art so special. It requires creativity, thought and time to find your own meaning. For example, many people can experience the same piece of art and have different interpretations of it. It all depends on how you yourself views the piece and the meaning you draw from it based on your own experiences. Art has been around for thousands of years now and is one of the very few things that allows us to tap into our emotions and dig deeper to find our own true meaning of it.
